The Summer of Broken Rules

Hey guys! It’s been a while but I’m back with a new post. Today I am going to be talking all about The Summer of Broken Rules. This book was recommended to me by a friend, and I loved it. However, there are some controversial opinions about it. So without further ado, let’s dive into it!

The Summer of Broken Rules

K.L. Walther

I genuinely enjoyed this book so much. It had all the markings of a book that would be perfect for summer, but I couldn’t wait to read it so I did in fact read it in the dead of winter. However, I can assure you that the vibes were still immaculate. Now, let’s get into what this book was actually about. The book revolves around Meredith, a 17 year old girl, who is going to visit her very large family in Martha’s Vineyard, where she spends her time every summer. This time she is going to Martha’s Vineyard for her cousins wedding, but this summer it feels a little different, because this is the first summer Meredith is spending without her sister. Her sister, Claire, passed away the previous year, and Meredith is struggling with the loss. On top of that, her long time boyfriend broke up with her two weeks before the wedding, so she doesn’t even have a date. Luckily, she has the perfect distraction. Her family has a tradition of playing a game called Assassin, where every person has a target, and once they shoot their target with a water gun, they get their target’s target. Meredith ends up making an alliance with some of her long standing friends, but finds herself drawn to one of the groomsmen, Wit. She ends up spending a lot of time with Wit, and can feel herself falling for him. This could cost her her heart, and the game. So, that was my quick little overview of the book, so let’s look at the pros and cons. Starting with cons, Meredith’s family is big. There are a lot of different people to keep track of, but I found that the author did a good job of not introducing everyone at once, and I didn’t find it too hard to keep track of. The next con, which is a big one for some people, is that the book takes place over the course of a week. This may not seem like a big deal, but Meredith does end up falling in love with this Wit, and spending an outrageous amount of time with him in only a week. To me the book did not feel rushed, and I felt like the romance did make sense, but it can be off putting to some. Honestly, there are too many pros to list. I really loved the setting, and I felt like the added theme of loss and grief to this book really made the plot much more deep and gripping. The author opens up more about Meredith’s sister’s death as the book goes on, which leaves you wanting to keep reading. All in all, I really loved this book, and I would recommend it to just about everyone. The Summer of Broken Rules gets a 10/10 for me.
